Tropical Depression Nine is meandering over the southern Bay of Campeche. (The satellite image seen on this posting is courtesy of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.) Its centered about 130 miles west-southwest of Campeche, Mexico, and has been stationary this morning. A slow eastward motion should begin later today, taking the center of the tropical cyclone near the coast of the Mexican state of Campeche tonight or early Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are 35 mph, and the depression could become a tropical storm before it moves inland, but some weakening should occur once the system moves over the Yucatan Peninsula. A Tropical Storm Warning continues along the coast of Mexico from Celestun to Frontera. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin by late this afternoon or evening. Total rainfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, perhaps as high as 15 inches, are expected across the Yucatan Peninsula. These rainfall amounts may produce life threatening flash floods. If the cyclone survives its path over land and emerges over the northwestern Caribbean Sea in about three days as forecast, there is an opportunity for some strengthening. Most of the global models, primarily the GFS and the HWRF, forecast a favorable upper-level environment for the system to redevelop. On this basis, the NHC forecast now maintains tropical depression status through five days. Get the latest on this tropical cyclone by visiting the NHC website at hurricanes.gov
