Tropical Storm Erin has formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, off of the Cape Verde Islands. Erin is expected to move over the open Atlantic over the next five days. By Tuesday, the system is forecast to still be east of Puerto Rico. Another system is churning in the Caribbean, heading into the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center is giving the system a 50% chance of developing into a tropical storm in the next 48 hours. Mid-August into October is typically the most active part of the US hurricane season.
