Tropical Update: Atlantic, Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico! Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season: Day 28 of 183! A concentrated area of spin at the lower levels of the atmosphere is emerging off the southern coast of South Carolina. Ahead of it thunderstorms are beginning to fire up over coastal waters. Its this weak area of low pressure that will need to be monitored this weekend as it lingers off the coast. Not only will it be festering over the warm current of water known as the Gulf Stream, but it will be protected under a pocket of light winds aloft. Steering currents are weak, which means the area of low pressure will meander off the southeast coast, perhaps through the middle to even latter part of next week. None of the weather models are particularly bullish on tropical development, but the overall ocean/atmosphere will tend to favor tropical formation for at least the next few days. For now forecast models keep the low pressure area mostly offshore, albeit within shouting distance of the coast. My weather website is open 24/7 darrylmeltondiamondheadweather/index.html
