Trouble In The Promised Land? Sometimes ago we reported that a certain Nakuru town businessman who is an ex Mayor had been doing rounds lobbying-with cash- to be allowed to construct a premise on the Kenya Railways land located in Nakuru town between the provincial hospital and the CBD. Well, the said trader cum politician proceeded and fenced off using mabati a section of the land where hes reportedly building a petroleum depot. We are told by those he approached including county Ministers, MCAs and people close to Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, that he claimed to have acquired the said plot on leasehold following approval by the defunct Municipal Council of Nakuru. After the Governor KM administration took over last year, Kinuthia announced hes trying to persuade KR to surrender the land stretching from KFA Headquarters to Gate House so as to build a country bus stage and hawkers stalls to ease congestion thats strangling the town. Soon we started hearing that the project has since been relocated to the KR quarters at Ziwani Kisulisuli area. Well this dashed the ease congestion program whose twin the Hawkers Complex at Mashambani Wholesale Market also seems to be a cropper despite millions of shillings being poured into it. Our sources say the development has since been turned into a URP affair with the politician claiming to have the backing of Deputy President William Ruto. Anyway for the time being a group of disillusioned residents are planning to bring down the proposed petroleum depot arguing its dangerously close to the highly populated CBD on top of a gentlemen agreement being flouted by a betraying county government. We are closely following this unfolding drama and well keep you posted. The group has given the county government two weeks to remove the depot after which theyll mobilize locals to bring it down.
