Truckies bear brunt of Charleville diversions CHARLEVILLE goat meat processor Western Meat Exporters (WME) is using the Quilpie-Thargomindah diversion to maintain supply routes after Fridays fiery crash closed the Mitchell Highway 30km to the south. As the major employer in the town, and the largest goat processor in Australia, WME roadtrains are now clocking up an extra 320km, diverting through Quilpie and Tharogmindah to link with Cunnamulla to the south. It costs $2000 in fuel, plus extra time. WME managing director Campbell McPhee said they had elected to travel the Charleville, Quilpie, Thargomindah, Cunnamulla to Bourke deviation both ways in and out of Charleville, adding an extra 320km each trip. We will travel both way using the Quilpie diversion, as that route is a much better road, he said. READ MORE
