True Confessions time. I’ve cheated in Karma Marketplaces Eat - TopicsExpress

True Confessions time. I’ve cheated in Karma Marketplaces Eat the Math event. Not my fault: there are very caring people in this office. There’s enough in my food bank hamper, but those here with strong maternal instincts feel I am going to starve and they need to thrust food at me. Yesterday it was leftover desserts from the staff potluck (I did not sneak any of the mains). To be frank, I wasn’t really in the mood for sweets; I was feeling under the weather because of caffeine withdrawal. So I cashed in my “free with ten coffees” chit at the local coffee shop and a few hours later the headache had subsided—and with that, the desserts vanished. Today a co-worker brought me a chicken Caesar salad. “You have to get some protein, you need more greens.” Dr. Gardner received a bag of bananas and oranges for all three of us, from another co-worker. It’s all appreciated, but — the point of this exercise is to experience what our lowest income citizens go through on a daily basis. Their own communities of support are mainly people in the same income bracket. Few if any will have kitchens stocked with enough ingredients to bake up “blondies” and banana bread to share with others, let alone money to buy someone a chicken Caesar. But here’s something to ponder: What if the kind of caring that’s been happening in the office were part of a community-wide concern for those who really don’t have the funds to feed themselves well? If you’re thinking of helping a food bank, here’s an interesting guide. John Challis – Media coordinator
