True Story! A Good Friend Of Mine, A Brotha From Oakland That I Met Back In 81- 82 While Living Out There, Asked Me If I Would Be So Kind As To Show A Friend Of His Around Harlem, As This Would Be Her First Time Visiting NY? I Replied, No Problem Ron. It Would Be My Pleasure! Give Her My Digits And Tell Her To Holla At Me When She Gets Here Cool! So Saturday Morning Around 10 Or 11, The Sista Calls Me. I See A 510 Area Code On My Caller ID, So Im Guessing Its Rons Friend From Oakland. I Answer With This, Aight Sis! Whats Crackin, You Ready To Rock And Roll? Lol! She Chuckles And Says, Excuse Me. Were You Expecting Someone Else! I Said, Nope, No Maam! I Was Expecting You! That Lightened Things Up And After Exchanging Pleasantries, She Explained To Me That She Was Staying At The Hyatt On 45th St. Off Times Square. Then She Went On To Tell Me That She Was Going To See Denzel In A Raisin In The Sun On Sunday Then Having Dinner With A Friend, An Elderly Lady From The Bronx. She Then Asked If I Would I Be Free To Give Her A Tour Of Harlem On Monday, Memorial Day? I Told Her That Would Be Fine, As I Also Had Plans For Sunday. Monday Comes And She Gives Me A Call Around 10:00AM, Letting Me Know That She Was Up And Getting Set To Walk Over To Grand Central Station To Sight See And Take Pictures. She Asked Me How, Where And What Train To Take To Get Up To Harlem? I Gave Her The Specifics And Told Her To Text Or Call If She Ran Into Any Problems. Roughly 1 Hour Later, She Text Letting Me Know That She Was Now At The Starbucks On 125th And Lenox Ave. I Pulled Up About 10 Mins Later, Jumped Out The Whip And Ran Inside, Not Having A Clue What The Sista Looked Like, I Just Asked The Sista Sitting On A Stool Staring Out The Window With An Anxious Look On Her Face, Selma? She Flashed A Big Smile As I Greeted Her With A Hug, Im Cobbo. Nice To Meet You! For The Next 2 Hours, I Gave Her The Cobbo Harlem Grand Tour! Lol! Filled With Stories, Historical Facts And Tasty Tidbits! Ok, Stop Laughing! (Smile) I Took Her To Langston Hughes Home, Astor Row, Marcus Garveys First Office Building, Abyssinian Baptist Church, Harlem Hospital, The Schomburg Research Library...The Largest Of Its Kind, Strivers Row, Sugar Hill, Edgecombe And Bradhurst Avenues, Paul Robersons Old Residence At 555 Edgecombe Ave., The Most Famous Harlem Address...409 Edgecombe Ave, Which Was The Past Residence Of Some Many Legendary African Americans...W.E.B DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, Walter White, Bill Bojangles Robinson And More. I Took Her Over To Riverside Drive, Washington Heights, We Stopped At Ralph Ellinsons Home And Took Pictures Of The Monument To Him. We Road Down 7th Ave, Adam Clayton Powell Blvd, 125th Street And The Apollo Theater. Shot Over The 145th Street Bridge To The Bronx...Just Had To Show Her Yankee Stadium! (Smile) Showed Her Red Rooster...Too Early To Go In But I Shared A Few Stories (Wink) She Told Me That She Ate At Sylvias On Saturday And Enjoyed It. We Went By The African National Theater On 5th Ave. Then Down To Marcus Garvey Park. I Pointed Out Many Of The Beautiful Brownstones, With Their Turn Of The Century Architecture. After The Tour, She Thanked Me, We Took A Few Pictures Together And Then Hugged And Promised To Stay Connected. I Let Her Off At Amy Ruths, As Thats Where She Was Meeting Her Friend a For Lunch! Selma Is A Beautiful Sister With A More Beautiful Spirit. I Truly Enjoyed Showing Her My Taste Of Harlem. Priceless Indeed! Love Is Love! Cobbo
