True Story – How One Yoga Secret Finally Got Me Ripped by Kris Fondran “The next time you work out, try breathing only through your nose. Both on the inhale and exhale. When you get to the point where you need to use your mouth, back off what you’re doing until you can breathe comfortably through your nose again.” So here’s the skinny on why this technique works, and how you can use it. First the WHY’S: When you breathe through your nose, you stimulate the para-sympathetic nervous system. This has a soothing, calming and focusing effect on the way you feel. It gives rise to the in-the zone or flow type experience. When you breathe through your mouth, you stimulate the sympathetic fight-or-flight nervous system. This has the opposite effect, and puts your whole body into emergency mode while releasing a cascade of catabolic stress hormones into your blood stream. Deep full nasal breathing gets more oxygen into your blood and to your muscles than short shallow mouth breathing. Nasal breathing maximizes lung capacity and respiratory efficiency. Greater respiratory efficiency speeds up workout recovery. Faster recovery = Faster gains. The more you train in a fully recovered state, the faster you’ll see gains in endurance, performance and strength. iStock_000012360943XSmall The HOW-TO: Level 1 Metazone Breathing 1. Start by breathing deeply and slowly through your nose on your way to the gym, or wherever you’re going to exercise. Both the inhale and exhale should be through the nose. 2. At first you may find it easier to practice this technique only during your rest periods between sets or circuits. 3. Once you feel comfortable with it, try integrating this practice during exercise. Remember to back off your intensity or decrease the weight a little if nasal breathing becomes difficult. As your capacity and conditioning improve you should be able to meet and then surpass your old personal bests. I’ll be glad to answer any and all questions in the comments section below. And please feel free to share your experiences with the method too! bodyweightcoach/07/yoga-breath/
