True love arises from within and has no subject or object – it just ‘is’. Love is a state of being, an energy that emanates from and flows through us, dwelling outside of desire, need, hope, devotion, obsession and all those other feelings and emotions that masquerade as love. The sense of awe, wonder and gratitude experienced in response to the moments of bliss that take us beyond ourselves, making us aware of an opening of our hearts and the singing of our soul – that’s true love. Such moments may occur when we witness a breathtaking sunset or a glorious rainbow, when we gaze upon a newborn child or have some other peak experience. They are momentary, unsustainable points in time when we hold our breath as if trying to make time stand still. We may feel a surge of thankfulness and overwhelming, all-embracing love. In that ‘wow’ moment we love all creation and during that precious window in time it is impossible to hate anyone or anything. That is true love.
