Trust in faith. Its about 11:48 and Id like to post another thought of the day. This one is about leadership. And about how we can broaden our thinking on the idea of whats important to accomplish. A lot of movies talk about small heroics; saving the neighborhood, defeating the bad guy, saving the world from a post-war apocalypse or dystopian nightmare ( of which the most recent reincarnation is The Hunger Games, :) ). But, ladies and gentlemen, thats not good enough; that wont cut it, for a couple reasons: 1. We dont live in a dystopian world. The world body (UN) is always working with democratic intentions. 2. These movie like heroics dont deal with day to day living, or day to day breathing. Ladies and gentlemen, this is why we have to learn to listen to our leader! Hes not in the big seat for no reason; hes there because he envisions big, thinks broadly, and understands how leadership should be developed and executed in America. Barack Obama is asking us to dream, and think, big and broadly. Hes asking us to understand that whats more important than movie like heroics is strong leadership skills to manage domestic and international efforts in important endeavors ( health, medicine, entrepreneurship, and technology ). Find a real problem; figure out how you can lead that effort; plan how you are going to build the skills necessary to lead and manage that effort. Case in point: Barack Obama himself. He found that in part, the entire nations community fabric was broken and fractured through the 70s and 80s. So, what did the man do? 1. He recognized the problem, and had the desire and ambition to address it. 2. He decided he needed to lead at the top; ie, from the position of power: The President of the United States. 3. He planned to gain the necessary skills and understanding to lead the country by organizing from bottom up: a. First, he organized in South Side Chicago in his 20s. b. Then, after attending Harvard Law School, came back to Chicago and began getting involved in civil rights law and legislation in Chicago. c. Then, he took his skills to the Illinois State legislature, and began developing ties and networks with whole of Chicago as well as the state of Illinois. In some ways, he was now trying to understand community at the larger state level. d. Then, after 3 years as a US Senator, he took the amazing jump of running for and becoming President of the United States. At this point, he was so well equipped with knowledge and experience with his previous organizing efforts, that he could now design a method to help organize and mobilize the entire national community. Brilliant! youtu.be/w4FP6VMJf_Q
