Truth in Islam • Allah says, which means, “O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.”(9:119). In this Ayah we are commanded to be with those who are true. • According to Tafsir al-Jalalayn, this verse means: “O you who believe, fear God, by refraining from [acts of] disobedience to Him, and be with those who are truthful, in [their] faith and covenants, by adhering to sincerity.” • This Ayah highlights the effects of friends, and social network on human behavior. This is why the Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘Associate only with a believer, and let only a God-fearing man eat your meals.’ • Being truthful is a Divine Commandment, which Allah rewards and penalizes for. It is a beautiful attribute that is associated with high integrity in mankind. The word believer equals being true and sincere. In fact, truth is the basis of belief because it is about matching one’s words with their action, • The word truth and its derivatives were mentioned throughout the Quran as a praiseworthy attribute, and a quality associated with those who are rewarded with Paradise. Similarly, in the Hadith, truth was praised by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). o For example in Surat Al-Maida, Allah says, which means, “Allah will say, This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness. For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment.” (119) o In Surat Al-Ahzab, Allah says, which means, “That Allah may reward the truthful for their truth and punish the hypocrites if He wills or accept their repentance. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful. (24)” o In Surat Az-Zumar, Allah says, which means, “And the one who has brought the truth and [they who] believed in it - those are the righteous.” (33) o The Prophet (ﷺ) said, which means, Truth leads to piety and piety leads to Jannah. A man persists in speaking the truth till he is enrolled with Allah as a truthful. Falsehood leads to vice and vice leads to the Fire (Hell), and a person persists on telling lies until he is enrolled as a liar. [Agreed upon]. • Truth is a Divine. Allah says in Surat An-Nisa, which means, “[It is] the promise of Allah, [which is] truth, and who is more truthful than Allah in statement. (122)”. He also said in Surat Al-Ahzab, which means, “And when the believers saw the companies, they said, This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth. And it increased them only in faith and acceptance. (22)” • It is also a Prophetic attribute, which many of the Prophet’s of God have been praised with. For example, Allah says in Surat Maryam, which means, “And mention in the Book [the story of] Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. (41)”. He also said, which means, “And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet. (54)” • The Prophet (ﷺ) was well known for being truthful and trustworthy before his mission and throughout his life. When he was worried about his own sanity after his encounter with Jebril, Lady Khadija said, Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, speak the truth, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones. • A Muslim therefore must be truthful, honest and trustworthy. They must be truthful with Allah, themselves and everyone else. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “There are three signs of a hypocrite: when he speaks, he tells lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays his trust.” [Agreed upon]. He also said, “Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, I guarantee a house in Jannah for one who gives up arguing, even if he is in the right; and I guarantee a home in the middle of Jannah for one who abandons lying even for the sake of fun; and I guarantee a house in the highest part of Jannah for one who has good manners. [Abu Dawud]. – In the hadith, we must speak the truth even if we were joking. • We must be truthful with ourselves and recognize our pitfalls, and do not accept praise. Ata ibn Abi Rabah reported that a man was praising another man in the presence of Ibn Umar. Ibn Umar began to throw dust towards his mouth. He said, The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, When you see those who praise people, throw dust in their faces.” • So let us make our motto, what Allah has said in Surat Al-Ahzab, “Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration - (23)”
