Truus and I were very lucky to see and hear this good production of one of the most remarkable plays from the English Renaissance on BBC4 when we were in England a few days ago (we have meanwhile moved to Amsterdam). Our only - comparatively minor - grumble was that the performance, which was very thorough, exact and true to the text, was a bit protracted. I used to disagree with Andrew Gurr (a great scholar) that probably Renaissance productions were not allowed to run beyond two hours, but I increasingly feel he may very well be right - it just gets all so much harder beyond that timespan, and the audiences of the time were given no interval, while a fair few STOOD all the way through a performance. I add, though, that I am in any case an impatient person, and getting more so! shakespearesglobe/theatre/whats-on/sam-wanamaker-playhouse/the-duchess-of-malfi
