Trying to Outsmart a chicken! They tell me that a chicken needs 14 hours or so of daylight to lay eggs. In winter I use a light bulb in the coop. This also serves a dual purpose - it helps heat the coop in winter. Its funny but all it takes is a 100 watt bulb. Lately one of my chickens has apparently discovered that its cute to turn off the light sometime during the night. I think she flies up, grabs the string and hangs on to turn it off. When I first saw the light off, I thought it might have been burned out. Nope. But then I didnt remember turning it off (?). So, I turned it back on, and thought nothing more about it - until the next day when the damn bulb was off again. The third time it happened I KNEW I had a smart-ass chicken in my coop! So today I raised the string approximately 6 inches... Who would have ever thought that I would be spending time, here in my 60s, trying to outsmart a chicken?
