Tshwane is the coolest place to visit … Tshwane is a city that beams with culture, creativity and a rich history. The capital city, known in some quarters as the Jacaranda City because of the blooming Jacaranda trees in spring, boasts a number of beautiful buildings and sights, from Church Square to the Palace of Justice, The Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park and the Union Buildings. Tshwane is undergoing a revival with artists, designers and free thinkers taking over the city. Without anyone noticing the change, Tshwane has become the coolest place to be. To celebrate the creative and cultural wealth that the capital city has to offer, Cool Capital is organising a biennale from 29 August to 16 November 2014. A biennale normally invites selected artists to celebrate art, design and architecture. Cool Capital Biennale, however, does not only invite selected artists and designers to exhibit, but also encourages all citizens of the capital city to creatively rethink their city and to rediscover the treasures it has to offer. This truly makes Cool Capital the first ever uncurated, DIY guerilla biennale. Like all others, this biennale would not be complete without a grand opening party to kick off this celebration of the coolest capital on the globe. The Open Window Institute has decided to support Cool Capital by hosting the launch event along with the City of Tshwane’s official Spring Campaign on Friday, 29 August 2014, at Open Window’s campus. The Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, will officially open the event. Guests will be treated to an array of food and drinks provided by various stalls at a night market. Various exhibitions and events will take place during the evening, including a sculpture garden with works for sale by Tshwane-based artists, including Anton Smit, Angus Taylor and Collen Maswanganyi; a graphic 35 m landscape panoramic From Mamelodi to Soweto by Atteridgeville artist Titus Matiyane; and a sculpture by Guy du Toit that will be lit on campus. Architect by profession and hip-hop DJ and remixer DJ Elque will grace the decks throughout the evening. Radio presenter, producer and renowned poet MoAfrika ‘a Mokgathi will open the event by performing one of her works, followed by the Themba Group, Tidal Waves and the SAMA-award winning band, Bittereinder. Tshwane will be on fire during the Launch Event. Join us on 29 August 2014 from 17h00 at Open Window’s campus in Centurion. Tickets range from R50 to R195. Parking is limited, so be sure to get there early. For more information and to buy your tickets please visit openwindow.co.za. Issued by the Communication, Marketing and Events Department
