Tsui Hark, finally, does not disappoint. But more than that, whatta surprise! The Taking Of Tiger Mountain is a loving homage to the nation-building cinema of Maos Red China (and I thought it was gonna be a new Zu Warriors From Magic Mountains of sorts with more CGI-overkill). It is old fashion in aspiration, modern in execution and retells the great story of a brave and admirable Peoples Liberation Army spy. To me, its two hours of snow-capped eye-candy Tiongs - those robust rural folks with a spirit and vigor - simply not found in LKYs nation-building-obsessed Singapore (dare I say, never too). And theres simply no handsomer army captain than Lin Gengxin since.... The onscreen creme de la creme of Tiong kare-lare-fares are up there, thats how my viewing-partner put it. Isnt that what the magic of cinema is also all about? Ill be returning for seconds anyday soon. https://youtube/watch?v=2Ix2hbUHigE
