Tuesday 10th June 2014 Played at Camloch McParland puts his ‘Mark on this victory Minor Board Under-14 league Naomh Lorcan O’Neills 5-4 St Paul’s 4-6 Naomh Lorcan O’Neills produced a tremendous 2nd half performance to overcome a very gallant St Paul’s team at Camlough on Tuesday night. Two great 2nd half goals from Mark McParland settled O’Neills, in a game that they seemed to have lost their way in, but stuck to their task and in the end scraped through by the single score. This was spirited, battling and determined performance from O’Neills, who didn’t score until the 12th minute, and by that time they were trailing 0-3 to 0-0. This was a quality St Paul’s team, they used the big Shane’s pitch to their advantage in the early stages of the game, and if it wasn’t for Sean Murphy in the O’Neills goals, the result might, just might, have been a little different, the goalkeeper made at least two or three outstanding save, one he plucked of his goal line, with the ‘Paul’s attackers bearing down on him. It was the Lurgan side that started the brightest and sharpest, points from Fiontan McCluskey twice and Oisin Farquhar and by the twelfth minute they were in the ascendancy Lorcan O’Neills were struggled to make an impact in the game, they seemed a little disjointed at time, too many mistakes were being made as the ‘Paul’s won the ball much to easily, and were creating space all over the field. A stunning run from Ryan Savage took him past a couple of defenders and he crashed the ball into the Lurgan net on twelve minutes. Surely this was the start of the O’Neills taking over, and although they did hit two more points, Drew McVerry from the acutest of angles and Ciaron Mackin at the end of the half, but scores from young McCluskey and Sean Toman tied the game on equal par going at the break. The 2nd half was just minutes old when Lorcan O’Neill went ahead for the first time in the game, a goal of simplicity in its development and it’s finishing. O’Neills won a free-kick thirty yards out, Ryan Savage with everyone expecting him to go for his point, he tapped it into the path of Ciaron Mackin, and the wee man’s shot flew to the back of the net. O’Neills were now in command, well they should have been, ‘Pauls just went to the other end of the field, cutting through the home defence, and what Ciaran Mackin did thirty seconds earlier, Conor Magill did now, rattling the ball past Sean Murphy. Peader Magill flicked home a 2nd St Paul’s goal, Sean Toman added another, and points from Oisin Farquhar and Fiontan McCluskey and the Lurgan boys were the dominant force. To O’Neills credit they never dropped their heads, Ryan Savage and Ciaran Mackin started to get things going, James McParland winning tackles, chasing everything, Michael Carragher worked hard never give up, and in the late stages of the game, Jamie O’Hanlon, Keelen Gallogly and Ryan Finnegan at the back, were a barrier that the Lurgan side just couldn’t overcome. Still there was a deficit to negotiate, and it wasn’t going to be easy, Ciaron Mackin, and Ryan Savage landed points, Drew McVerry when there is a chance for a goal, he just doesn’t give up, chased a lost cause, got his foot to the ball, inches from the end line to direct it past a surprised Callum White in the ‘Pauls goals. It was all flowing towards the visitor’s goals now, young Mark McParland just took over, with a brace of goals inside a five minutes spell. A high ball into the St. Paul’s goalmouth, he never took his eye of it, climbed up and got a fist to it before the goalkeeper, for his first, and minutes later he was Mr Eagle-eye as Drew McVerry’s shot came back of the upright, grabbing the rebound and his shot give the ‘keeper no chance. That was that, the visitors had pointed before those two Mark McParland goals, but it wasn’t enough to get them anything for this game. A very welcomed result for Naomh Lorcan O’Neills, and after losing to Derrynoose and to Killeavy in the championship, this result, and in the way it was achieved was quite pleasant. Naomh Lorcan O’Neills line-out Sean Murphy, Jamie O’Hanlon, Ryan Finnegan, Aidan Overseen, Dara O’Callaghan, James McParland, Keelen Gallogly, Cormac Feely, Ciaran Mackin, Miceal Carragher, Ryan Savage, Sean Finnegan, Mark McParland, Drew McVerry, Eoghan O’Callaghan Naomh Lorcan O’Neills scorers Mark McParland [2-0] Ciaron Mackin [1-2] Ryan Savage, Drew McVerry [1-1 each] Naomh Lorcan O’Neills substitutes Peter O’Callaghan for Eoghan O’Callaghan.
