Tuesday 8th July Koala Room Update: Lately our Koala friends have been interested in mirrors and looking at their own reflection. Konnor enjoyed making funny faces in the mirror and Claudia had fun looking at herself from different angles. These mirrors located in the Koala room give the children a sense of self identity and to become familiar with who they are. After lunch the children engaged in some tummy time with their educators. We sang songs and played with various toys located around the room. Henry and Aiden where both so clever at moving the beads on the bead stand, the educators guided Henry and Aiden with taking turns. We recently received a new toy in the Koala room, an activity stand which the children can climb through, press buttons and insert balls and different shaped toys into the correct spots. The children are really enjoying exploring this new activity as there is continued interest and interaction from the children. Possum Room Update: Whilst indoors this morning Dylan provided the children with new ankle bells. The children jumped around and heard the jiggling noise the bells created which made them jump some more to continue the sound. Sam read “Brown bear, brown bear” and used the velcro animals to place them onto the felt board. Sophie, Jaanavhi, Charlie, Sienna, Lachlan and Jamie had the opportunity to take turns at placing the animals onto the board. Outside Sarah sat in the sandpit with the children and asked them a variety of questions about what they should make whist in there. Sarah then began to dig a hole and the children started to help her, once they had finished the children then decided to fill it back up. Michaela provided the children with another opportunity to dance and jump around today by bringing the CD player outside for the children to dance to the music. Bilby Room Update: Today in the Bilby room we all enjoyed the outdoors and spending time playing in the warm winter sun, we got some new balance bikes and swivel bikes to play with outside. Chicko, Bill and Hunter were very interested in these bikes taking time to learn how they worked, Anon was a little bit to short for the swivel bikes but he was determined to ride it so he reached out with his tippy toes trying so very hard. Inside today we did some train track painting using sponges and train tracks moving them along the paper to make patterns Cruze, Brodie and Liam did some very great paintings. Platypus Room Update: As it is Naidoc Week this week Mel and Ange have chosen various Dream time stories to read to the children. Mel read How the kangaroos got their tails, this story taught the children that it is wrong to be greedy as the Kangaroo stole all of the sugar bag and didn’t share with the other Kangaroo, this caused a fight with sticks , and the sticks were transformed into tails to remind them of this incident. Summer said at the end of the story “Now they have tails Mel”. We also did Aboriginal flag face painting, the children were told about the origin of the flag and what the colours each mean. Ruby and Estella were very excited to race into the bathroom to look at their faces in the mirror. Outside Tori had the children paint their hands in the Aboriginal flag colours to decorate our outside wall area. Kangaroo Room Update: In keeping with Naidoc week children enjoyed watching some Dream time stories and communicated with educators about the stories and the meanings behind them. They also made some Aboriginal flags and recreated some traditional drawings, asking many questions about the symbols and their implications. Our Kangaroo friends made some great patterns using the peg boards. They utilised their social and sharing skill as they had to share boards, leading to some fantastic collaboration and understanding of each other’s needs and wants. Once again children had the opportunity to run on the oval. With a number of activities to choose from children were both physically and mentally fulfilled. Fine motor activities were placed on mats for children to have quiet time in the lovely warm sun. There were balls being kick around , children running up and down the hill, friends looking for dinosaur bones and our future athletes were practicing their long jumping skills. Lots of fun was had by all in the warm winter sun. Emu Room Update: Last Tuesday several of the children enjoyed creating their own stories. As an extension to that experience and to celebrate NAIDOC Week I provided children with opportunities to explore a different type of storytelling, that of the Dreamtime tradition. Cameron showed the children one on the computer, this was followed up with showing the children dreamtime cards that depicted different signs and symbols. I encouraged the children to look dreamtime pictures and symbols displayed in the room and we discussed what these symbols meant. Amara, Cody, Ace, Grace, Ryder, Tilly, Riley, Connor, and Alexander worked hard to create their own dreamtime stories. A popular story was about a bear that went down to the river and saw a fire. Please take the time to look at these stories displayed above the locker area. Upon our return to the Cottage many children were tired so we had a short rest to the soothing sounds of a didgeridoo. Cameron then read the children a story about Bush Tucker, Riley suggested that it would be a good idea to investigate some bush food. A visit to the oval was in high demand so we ventured across and burnt off loads of energy again with running races, long jump, soccer, rolling down the hill and even a few quiet experiences on the mats. The interest in SHARKS continues to grow – this morning the children learnt about the whale shark and a manta ray. We measured how long the whale shark and manta ray can be and marked this on the carpet with pictures of these sea creatures. The children were very excited to learn about the safest ways to go swimming with sharks – in a cage. Many children were heard saying “I’m not even scared” but when I reminded them just how long the great white shark is with our marking on the carpet many changed there minds.
