Tuesday, July 23, 2013 DESIRE… That word describes where my heart has been for the past few months. There are times when I am melancholy enough that the poetic writings of a few , particularly one of the mystics, speaks deeply into my spirit. The one I seem to appreciate most is Frederick W. Faber. (1814-1863) I want to share portions of his “Desire of God.” I hope it helps to enliven a renewed passion in your soul and spirit. I have taken the liberty to make small adjustments in the 19th century language to strengthen Faber’s message. Nothing honors God like the thirst of desire, nor possesses the heart so completely with Him; for it burns “the world” out with the swift ease of fire, and fills life with good works till it runs over the brim. So the, pray for desire, for love’s most desperate yearning, for the beautiful longing of holy desire; Yes, pray for a soul that is ceaselessly burning with the soft fragrant flames of His holy fire. For the heart only truly dwells with its treasure, And they who love God cannot love Him by measure, for their love is but hunger to love Him still more. Is it hard to serve God, timid soul? Have you found gloomy forests, dark glens, mountain-tops on the way? All the hard would be easy, all those tangles unwound, if you would only desire as well as obey. The lack of desire is the root of all our ills; Many thousands have walked through the dark path-way because they have drunk the wine of God’s appointed will, For desire is the jubilant longing for God. ‘Tis a great gift of God following after our Lord, Yet the old Hebrew times were ages of fire, And those fainting saints fed on each dim-figured word, and God called men loved most – The Men of Desire! Oh then, wish more for God, burn more with desire, Covet more the dear sense of His Presence. Pray louder, pray longer, for the sweet gift of His holy fire to come down on your heart with its whirlwinds of His grace. Yes, long for your God, fainting one! Be famished, thirsty, and…restless for that life to be yours. God loves to be longed for, He loves to be sought, for He sought us Himself with such passionate longing and love; He died for desire of us – and yearns for us now to be with Him! Oh the Joy of RIDING THE WIND of desire. There is no satisfaction like it on earth. ( Please share this POST with your FB friends.)
