Hope you can join us. (Palm Bay)—The Palm Bay Firefighters Community Benevolent Inc. will host the 2014 Ladder Climb for the Children’s Hunger Project on Saturday, November 15th from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Wal-Mart at on Malabar Road, SE. The event will raise money through the purchase of Wal-Mart gift cards that will be used by The Children’s Hunger Project to purchase food for distribution to local children. Palm Bay firefighters will climb the 100-foot aerial ladder truck for each gift card purchased and will carry a symbolic bag of food with them as they climb. Gift cards can be purchased in $5 increments beginning as low as $5 to as much as the donors wish to purchase. “People don’t realize it but there are school children that go home each weekend with little or no food to eat,” said Firefighter John Mellace who is helping coordinate this year’s event. “The Children’s Hunger Project provides food for these hungry children and whatever we can do to support them is good for the kids and good for our community as a whole.” The Children’s Hunger Project is a local charity whose mission is to provide school children in Brevard County with weekend food backpacks. The program is specifically aimed at elementary school students who are experiencing critical periods of growth and development. Research conducted by the Center for Hunger and Poverty at Brandeis University indicates that even mild under-nutrition may lead to reductions in physical growth and impaired brain function. Children who experience hunger also have higher levels of chronic illness, anxiety, depression and behavioral problems. The Palm Bay Firefighters Community Benevolent, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) organization designed to provide community support through charitable events and contributions.
