Tuesday, November 11 ….. Thankful Today’s THANKFUL is for VETERANS The United States of America has five military branches. U.S. Army ……………….. 14 June 1775 U.S. Navy ……………….. 13 October 1775 U.S. Marine Corps ……… 10 November 1775 U.S. Coast Guard ………. 4 August 1790 U.S. Air Force …………… 18 September 1947 Some would argue that the U.S. Coast Guard does not belong in that list. I would respond that you need to do your homework. The USCG conducts a boot camp equal to, if not more rigorous than, the boot camp of any of the other services. It is 13 weeks of intensive training. Recruits are trained in all military procedures plus search and rescue and lifesaving techniques. Some of the most dangerous assignments in the military … any military … are in the Coast Guard. And Coasties serve from the Arctic to lonely islands to desert outposts to lighthouses to inland bases to ships at sea to … I, personally spent 12 months on the Sahara Desert on a LORAN base assignment. Very isolated, very hot, very dangerous duty in Libya. The U.S. Coast Guard has a higher percentage of men lost in time of war than any other military service ….. not the highest count … the highest percentage. Since it is Veteran’s Day I would like to recognize the members of my family that have honorably served during my lifetime. I’m sure I will miss some of the extended family. I apologize in advance.
