Tuesday November 12, 2013. Luke 8:42, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. Lord Jesus, speak to me. As I meditate on this verse his morning I think back on the time my sister died of cancer. The phrase that sands out most in my memory most is when my mother said, “your children are not supposed to die before you.” When I have time I like to dig into my family history. The thing that strikes me most about times past is the number of children who died either in childbirth or before the age of 5. I see records of these women having 8 – 10 children but only 6 living. My grandmother had four and only two survived past five. In today’s society it is uncommon for children to die. In fact if a news story wants to gain emphasis it includes it effect on children. When organizations are trying to get us to give money for relief aid, they include pictures, and stories, of children being impacted, and it causes us to give more readily. Father, I wish it had more widespread impact when we talk about you sacrificing your Son for the entire world. It certainly does not have the impact recent pictures of children dying in Syria have. While the stories of these children dying will fade, the story of your son’s death, and resurrection, has survived for two thousand years. That is an incident that has survived an attempt by countless millions over the centuries to wipe it out. Just as you left a witness to you love and power at the Gerasenes region after you rid the man of the Legion of demons, you have always left a witness to you love and sacrifice. Father I thank you and praise you for sending your Son for me, one of billions. Amen.
