Tuesday October 15, 2013. Luke 8:7, “And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. Lord Jesus, speak to me. As I meditate on this verse this morning I think back to when I was in High School. The Friends church had a summer camp in the High Sierras called Quaker Meadow. It was just East out of Fresno, about an hour up the mountain. There was a chapel that had a large picture window that overlooked the meadow. There were these thorny thistles that grew to 6 to 7 feet tall, and boy were they thick. They had multicolored flowers that budded from them. And while they were beautiful flowers, you couldn’t pick them. In fact you could not even walk through them. They were very thick and very prickly. They were so thick they would eventually choke out all the grass that grew in the meadow. That is the picture in my mind when I think of this parable. It is impossible for anything else to grow in this kind of thorns. These are some of the problems the seedlings had trying to grow. The thorns in this parable represent the distractions of everyday life that the New Christian has to contend with. Lord even old growth had to contend with these thorns. You have helped me developed a pretty consistent prayer time each morning, and I am very thankful for that. I very seldom miss our time to-gather in the mornings. When I do have to miss our time to-gather my day does not go right. This is why to older growth, and that does not necessarily have to do with age, needs to mentor the newer growth, to help them overcome the distractions of this world. Lord, I thank you for your Spirit, and older mentors that, through the years, that have helped me grow to this point. I pray that I can mentor others to follow your paths and directions. Amen.
