Tuesdays lyrical puzzler (1/27/2015): Long ago and oh so far away, I fell in love with you before the second show, your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear, but youre not really here, its just the radio… *************** Mondays lyrical puzzler (1/26/2015): I dont bother chasing mice around, oh no, I slink down the alley looking for a fight, howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night, singing the blues while the lady cats cry… Answer: Stray Cat Strut, The Stray Cats, 1982 Fun fact: In 1981, Long Island-based guitarist/singer Brian Setzer was eager to be part of the revival of rockabilly (the merger of roots rock n roll with hillbilly country) that was underway in England, so he and his cohorts moved there and helped spearhead the genres renewed popularity. Their debut album, strongly influenced by Gene Vincent and Bill Haley & the Comets, made the Top Ten there in 81, which resulted in a recording contract in the US and the release of the Built for Speed album in the US in 1982. It soared to #2 and remained there for much of the year, and the singles Stray Cat Strut and Rock This Town reached #3 and #9 respectively. The trio had their differences and soon broke up, splintered off into other configurations, reunited and broke up again over the ensuing years. In the 90s, Setzer capitalized on the renewed interest in Big Band and swing music, forming The Brian Setzer Orchestra, which featured multiple sax, trumpet and trombone players in addition to guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. They performed many classic tunes of the 40s and 50s (Jump, Jive and Wail, etc) as well as Stray Cats material during their numerous tours throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.
