Tula and Bandit Training Session #6 : Foster dogs Bandit and Tula are doing wonderfully in training and next week will be their graduation class, whoo hoo. While Tula didnt have the best week (like people, dogs can have their off weeks) she is doing really well. The next hurdle we have with her, is she is fearful of the touch and release after the stay command so we will keep working on that. What this means is when the dogs are in a sit- stay or down-stay, we walk up to them and touch them lightly and say ok and then they can be released from their stay. Bo trained her this week in class while I had Bandit so we will switch it up next week to see if maybe she does better with me. Training has completely raised her confidence and while she doesnt seem to entirely enjoy training like Bandit does, it has completely transformed her behavior at the Ruff House. She is not nearly as timid, especially with me, comes and greets guests (which in Tulas world means she approaches new people and sniffs and MIGHT actually receive a pat) and seems much more comfortable. Also, notice in her picture below where she is in a sit-stay and there is chicken on the ground. Tula and Bandit are starting to demonstrate very good self control. Bandit is a rock star in class in my opinion, albeit a little annoying at times with some impulse control (there is an un-neutered male in class he isnt fond of, so he will bark at him on occasion ) he is doing awesome. I am glad there are challenges and triggers for him since that gives us something/someone to train with. He can learn he isnt running the show, his humans have it all together and he can act and react accordingly. His sit-stays and down-stays are stellar and we will up the distractions as time goes on and really make sure he has mastered those. I think squeaky toys will be THE distraction for him (even more so than another dog) since he cant get enough of those, so they have added that into the class and so far so good. In the 4th photo, while Bandit was distracted and his attention was not fully on me, he did NOT break his stay until I told him to. Good boy Bandito!!!! So that is it for this week As long as they are in our care we will continue to take them to classes. The next series of classes will be the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) so well keep you posted on that. That raises the bar a lot higher and is a lot more challenging so time will tell. I suppose they will be as good as we are. If we slack in our training so will they so we will need to be diligent. Bandit will love it:) Both these beauties are up for adoption so if you are interested please contact peaceandpaws29@yahoo Thanks so much for taking this journey with us. All made possible by YOU.
