Tulsidas (Hindi pronunciation: [t̪ʊls̪iːd̪aːs̪], also known as Goswami Tulsidas;[3] 1497/1532[1]–1623) was a Hindu poet-saint, reformer and philosopher renowned for his devotion to the god Rama. A composer of several popular works, he is best known as the author of the epic Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Sanskrit Ramayana in the vernacular Awadhi. Tulsidas was acclaimed in his lifetime to be a reincarnation of Valmiki, the composer of the original Ramayana in Sanskrit.[4] He is also considered to be the composer of the Hanuman Chalisa, a popular devotional hymn dedicated to Hanuman, the divine devotee of Rama.[5] Tulsidas spent most of his life in the city of Varanasi.[6] The Tulsi Ghat on the Ganges River in Varanasi is named after him.[3] He founded the Sankatmochan Temple dedicated to Hanuman in Varanasi, believed to stand at the place where he had the sight of Hanuman.[7] Tulsidas started the Ramlila plays, a folk-theatre adaption of the Ramayana.[8] He has been acclaimed as one of the greatest poets in Hindi, Indian, and world literature.[9][10][11][12] The impact of Tulsidas and his works on the art, culture and society in India is widespread and is seen to date in vernacular language, Ramlila plays, Hindustani classical music, popular music, and television series.[8][13][14][15][16][17] Part of a series on Hinduism Om.svg Hindu History Concepts[show] Schools[show] Deities[show] Scriptures[show] Practices[show] Gurus, saints, philosophers[show] Other topics[show] Glossary of Hinduism terms Portal icon Hinduism portal v t e Contents [hide] 1 Transliteration and etymology 2 Life 2.1 Sources 2.2 Incarnation of Valmiki 2.3 Early life 2.3.1 Birth 2.3.2 Childhood 2.3.3 Initiation from guru and learning 2.3.4 Marriage and renunciation 2.4 Later life 2.4.1 Travels 2.4.2 Darshan of Hanuman 2.4.3 Darshan of Rama 2.4.4 Darshan of Yajnavalkya and Bharadvaja 2.4.5 Attributed Miracles 2.5 Literary life 2.5.1 Composition of Ramcharitmanas 2.5.2 Last compositions 2.6 Death 3 Works 3.1 Ramcharitmanas 3.2 Other major works 3.3 Minor works 3.4 Popularly attributed works 4 Doctrine 4.1 Nirguna and Saguna Brahman 4.2 The name of Rama 4.3 Rama as Brahman 4.4 Vedanta, World and Maya 4.5 Views on other Hindu deities 4.6 Bhakti 5 Critical reception 6 Notes 7 References 8 External links
