Tune for the Day (Wednesday) - ok yesterday the Beatles, the day before the Stones, today : The Who. I`ve been going on about punk & post-punk music for a bit, but the first punk song was clearly a pre-punk song - `My Generation`by the Who; the disaffected lyrics (Hope I Die Before I Get Old` - I carved that line into many a school bench), the anger, the energy, the speed, Roger Daltrey`s stutter, the aggression ( ... of guitars smashed on stage & into amps ... once they could afford replacement ones). This was 1965 (not that I was around to listen to it then), some 20 years before punk. The Who brought out out a fair few other good singles (& album tracks), but never surpassed `My Generation`. Like the Stones, the Who probably should have broken up in the 80s, rather than keeping going & singing Hope I Die Before I Get Old in their 60s, with only Keith Moon to arguably manage to do so. When I was about 16, I always wanted to look like Roger Daltrey in `Tommy`. Not sure, if I managed to grow up, or simply resigned myself to the fact that that was just not going to happen (or both?). When I was 16, I loved the music in `Tommy`, but thought the film was quite crap. I did see it again, some 7 - 8 years ago, and my opinion had utterly turned around. I now thought the music was rather mediocre (a few good tunes, but rock-opera is a rather dodgy concept), while I now enjoyed the film in all its absolute OTT absurdity. Funny how perspectives change. Anyhow here it is, `My Generation`, I have given up on my intent to die old (too old for that!) & haven`t carved it anywhere for quite some time. https://youtube/watch?v=qN5zw04WxCc
