Tune of the Day (Friday) - A week into this and no Waterboys yet? - TopicsExpress

Tune of the Day (Friday) - A week into this and no Waterboys yet? ... shurely something wrong? Ok, let`s remedy this. In any Top 20 of mine, the first three Waterboys albums would be in it, possibly even any Top 10. I know I`m living in Ireland & I probably have to tread carefully here ... but I think Ireland ruined the Waterboys to a fair degree. Shortly after the third album `This is the Sea`, Mike Scott relocated to Ireland. What followed was a long break & `Fisherman`s Blues` eventually. It had its moments & so have most Waterboys albums since, but none of the brilliance of the first three. Maybe it wasn`t Ireland, but Karl Wallinger leaving the band (as some of the best on `Fisherman`s Blues` was still co-written with him), who knows. Anyhow I`m sorry I never got to see the Waterboys live during their early years, but plenty of times since then - the best gigs were the ones, where they played lots of the old stuff. When I was still living in Germoney in the early 80s, one of the German equivalents of InDublin or HotPress had a London-based correspondence, who was reporting about up & coming bands from London & the UK. He reported on the Waterboys & their first single `A Girl Called Johnny` creating quite a stir. I bought the single on that recommendation & haven`t looked back since. It`s about Patti Smith, so it can`t be bad ... so here it is : https://youtube/watch?v=vvF3HifRCc0
