#TunesTuesday by Jennifer Oliva The Internet was buzzing and completely confused yesterday following the announcement of Blink-182s break up. It all started with a press release stating that Travis Barkers music & tattoo festival Musink Fest would feature a Tom DeLonge-less Blink 182 line up with Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio fame filling in on guitar. The press release went on to state that Tom DeLonge didnt want to participate in any Blink-182 projects indefinitely, but would rather work on his other non-musical endeavors. A couple hours later, Tom DeLonge took to his Instagram page, posted a weird picture to address the buzz and stated that he never quit the band and didnt understand how the press release was sanctioned by the band. There was a lot of he said, he said, they said, we said. Then last night, Rolling Stone released an interview conducted with Mark Hoppus & Travis Barker to set the record straight. In the tell-all interview, the duo goes on to say that for the past 2 years Tom DeLonge had been delaying any & all work to be done for their next album. They also go on to state that they were tired & embarrassed covering for Tom DeLonges antics. Travis Barker goes on to question the bands reunion, which happened after his near-death airplane accident with fellow musician, DJ AM, in 2008. Mark Hoppus goes on to state that Tom DeLonge, in fact, has not quit the band but will not be taking part of its next endeavors. This is sad news because Blink182 has played some role in our 20-something lives. Those countless afternoons, wasting away watching TRL on MTV, we saw Blink182. They defined a generation; they defined and perfected the musical genre that is pop punk and inspired many to pick up a guitar or learn to play drums. Whether we used to be fans, still are fans, or just enjoyed their music, this was major music news yesterday and a great example of PR at work. As someone who is a major fan of Blink182 (they were my first concert at age 12) I cant imagine the band without Tom DeLonge. His voice, the playful-perverted banter between him and Mark Hoppus at live shows, his song writing. I just know that this was the first music that I found for myself; my music. This was the band that made me think for myself and find my own musical taste; break away from my parents music. My parents have always hated Blink182, they hated this music video, Whats My Age Again?, but loved me enough to let go see them as a tween. They also cant understand why Ive had to see them 9 other times in my life. https://youtube/watch?v=K7l5ZeVVoCA
