Tunisia was the first country in the Arab States region to overthrow its regime during the past three years of dramatic political and governmental change in the region. The country then embarked on a thorough process of determining what the new Tunisia should look like. UNDP was asked to support the process leading to the election of the National Constituent Assembly (NCA), and then to support the Assembly as it went about its work of reaching out to citizens and designing the new constitution. Three years after the old regime fell, a new constitution was approved by the NCA in late January. While the process of change has not always been easy - the debate has been vigorous and there have been deaths of political figures - Tunisia now has for the first time a constitution with broad support. UNDP will continue to work with Tunisia on the next stages of its democratic journey. undp.org/content/undp/en/home/presscenter/articles/2014/01/27/new-constitution-a-historic-landmark-on-journey-to-democracy-for-tunisia/
