Turner Classic Movies is showing many movies with a racial theme in honor of MLK Day! One of my absolute favorites is Tennessee Williams Intruder In the Dust made in 1949. It is set in 1950s Mississippi, and is the story of a proud black landowner farmer accused unjustly of killing a white man. It is hard to believe a film like this was made only 66 years ago and had such horrible treatment and mind sets that were allowed to be spoken and accepted where black people were concerned! This movie is an eye opener, and I have seen it probably 15/20 times! I love the Lucas Beauchomp character, but I identify most with Chick, Lucas young white friend and defender! He throws off his silly prejudices and makes us all proud of his determination to obtain justice for his BLACK friend and mentor! A lovely thought provoking movie! One of the essentials in overcoming adversity in a strange crazy world that was the JIM CROW south!
