Turning 250 years of watchmaking technology upside down, the Omega Co-Axial Escapement was hailed at its introduction in 1999 as the first giant leap forward in technology for the escapement in centuries. The escapement is a major part of the movement; it slowly releases power from the mainspring in carefully measured intervals, which then are used by the watch to keep the accurate time. This is, really, the very heart of a watch movement: the part that measures time. Since the 18th century, the lever escapement has been making its signature tick-tock sound, all the while needing to be lubricated because of an innate challenge: there is a lateral friction, a tiny bit of scraping, that occurs each time the lever moves. This has always been one of the weaknesses of the design, and one reason that watches need to be periodically serviced and re-lubricated. Invented and patented by English watchmaker George Daniels, the Co-Axial Escapement not only reduces friction inside the movement, but it also results in a more accurate movement, that doesnt need to be serviced as frequently as its counterparts. Omega now uses this technology in most of its watches, along with silicon movement parts that most other watch companies, other than Patek Philippe, avoid due to the high cost of manufacturing them.
