Turtle patrol today was very interesting, 1st set of tracks from a young turtle showed us that she made 2 attempts at making a nest but gave up. This could be due to many reasons, disturbed by animals, people, noise, light etc. Further along the beach we found what we believed was a nest made by the same turtle, we know this by her size, & marks she left from the barnacles on her Brest plate. We dug down to locate the egg camber but found nothing, sadly. There is an increase in activity on our beach over the last few weeks, very encouraging. Another important point is that this young turtle, & we know this from the small tracks she left is aprox 25 years of age. This means that the protection that was started here on Crete 25 years ago is seeing the 1st of its hatchlings return to where the were born.
