Tuvalu & Kiribati feeling the impact of climate change Climate change is no longer an abstract concept that scientists and environmentalists discuss, but a reality of many people’s lives. Over the past few years record breaking and extreme weather events including sweltering summers, super-storms, wildfires and shrinking icecaps, alongside the acidifying of the oceans as more CO2 dissolves, are just a small taste of what may come. Around the world communities are already feeling the impacts of climate change, from rising sea levels and coastal erosion in the Pacific Islands, to longer and more intense droughts across many parts of Africa Our Pacific Island neighbours are on the front-line of climate change. Tidal surges and rising sea levels are destroying people’s homes, gardens and fresh water supplies. Fish stocks are diminishing around bleached coral reefs. Some Pacific Islanders have even relocated inland in an effort to escape the effects of climate change. What can you do? Stop harming, start helping – make changes in your life to help prevent dangerous climate change At home: · Don’t take the car – walk, cycle or use public transport instead · Switch to 100% green power · We know it’s hard but minimise air travel where possible · Don’t waste energy – if you’re not using it, switch it off! In the community: · Become active in a climate change campaign · Green your workplace – talk to them about reducing their emissions · Lobby your council and local politicians to act on climate change · Talk about how to reduce emissions to everyone you can Below are is a collection of pictures from Tuvalu and Kiribati islanders are taking to adapt to their changing environment, and people getting on with their daily lives.
