‘Twas the Night Before the Race! Twas the night before the race, when all through the house Not a runner was stirring, not even a spouse; The gear was laid out by the shoes with great care, In hopes that a good sleep would soon be there; The competitors were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of medals danced in their heads; After eating my fill while reading the race map, I had just settled down for a long power nap, When out on the table the alarm arose with a chirp, I sprang from my bed and jumped into my shirt! Away to the car I flew like a flash, Revved up the engine and was off in a dash! The moon was out giving off a great glow, Gave a lustre to the cars as they parked in a row. When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a slew of runners clothed in bright gear. With many elite runners lively and slick, I knew in a moment I’d have to be quick. More rapid than I, in the corrals they came, Focused and ready, putting the rest of us to shame: “Now elite men and women, the rest of you here! Over to the start line—watches set—they cheer! To the front of the line! out from the stall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” As runners fall behind, and elite runners fly, I try to keep on pace—I signed up for this? Why?; So up to the finish line the runners they flew With times that made records, and others too Then, in a twinkling, I crossed the line at the bend The pacing and struggling comes to an end. As I gathered my medal, and was heading around Off to the food tent was where I was bound I was covered in sweat from my head to my foot, My clothes were all tarnished with Gu and its soot; I bundled my gear, flung it into my pack, Jumped in my car, just wanting to get back. My legs—they were heavy! but my thoughts, they were merry Happy to be home, though my body was weary! As I lay on the couch, and was starting to drift I planned my next race, plotting how to be swift. And that my friends is the end of this verse Where I hope you found much joy & mirth.
