Twenty Years ago today, Ray Allen, Allen Steele, Greg Scott, John Smith, Gordon Retzer and I were all in Delhi, India, having arrived the day before from Singapore via Bangkok. We didnt spend more than a few hours in Bangkok, where Allen Steele and Greg Scott and I visited the Adventist Study Centre for Buddhism, which at that time was staffed by an Australian pastor as the centre director. When we arrived in New Delhi, we all stayed in two hotel rooms. It was kinda crowded but we snuggled up and made the most of it. Then on February 28, we split up. Allen Steele, Greg Scott, and John Smith went site seeing in Delhi, while Ray Allen, Gordon Retzer, and I headed to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. We took a taxi. I cant remember why we didnt take a bus. Anyway, the road journey was rough enough, but the car was rougher. I sat in the front seat and somehow all the dust and fumes from the front of the car and outside came through the vents into my face. It took a lot longer to get to Agra then we had expected. So we alighted from the cab, told the driver to wait here, and we literally sprinted around the Taj Mahal, into the mausoleum, gazed in wonder for mere minutes, and then sprinted out after taking a few choice snaps of that wondrous place. We jumped into the cab and headed back to New Delhi. Along the way we encountered a road block for some reason, and the driver had to take us the longer way round. 8 hours later, after a massive detour, we arrived back in New Delhi. We had missed the flight we were supposed to take with the rest of our crew to travel to the Adventist Media Centre in Pune, Maharastra. So we three stayed another night in New Delhi, and caught a flight the next day. We were welcomed in Pune and we exchanged lots of jokes describing our adventures in getting there. We did a tour of the production facility, which was located on the Adventist mission campus. I was assigned to my quarters which would be home for about three months. And I ended up getting a bit sick because of all the dirty fumes I ingested during the Agra trip, but I was okay after a few days. And so began my India assignment, which was full of lots of interesting and exotic stories that I must tell one day. God is good, all the time!
