Twenty five to life When you’ve lost your kids and your wife and you’re facing twenty five to life do you wonder how you got here? You know it’s a shame you have no one to blame and all that’s left in your heart is fear. Everyone here can tell you’ll spend your life in a cell and your hearts about to beat out of your chest. You should have taken the deal then tried to appeal you realize now that might have been best. If the jury’s back quick reasonable doubt didn’t stick and you’re going to be gone a long time. So try and be prepared when the verdict is aired it’s going to be a lot worse than a fine. There’s no one here with you your family is through and your friends are nowhere to be found. You’ve never been so alone you’re totally on your own and you feel like a stranger right here in your hometown. In walks the court reporter as the rooms called to order its time to learn your fate. They are coming in too soon from the jury room so it’s not a hung jury at any rate. The jury foreman is asked to stand with the verdict in his hand and he states a decision has been made. The whole thing doesn’t make sense there wasn’t much of a defense and it’s time the piper was paid. Now it’s been ten years and millions of tears and this place still doesn’t feel like home. It’s where your time will be spent but you don’t have to pay rent and you’ll always live here alone. It doesn’t seem real it takes years for an appeal but all you have now is time. Believe it or not a life sentence is what you got and you can’t get it off your mind. Life inside of this fence can really be tense as you struggle each day to survive. The only friend in here is your constant fear and your will to try and stay alive. So when you hear someone say that crime doesn’t pay they should think about you in this place. The price you have to pay will leave you wrinkled and gray as eternity in that cell you now face. Steve McKinney 08/20/2013
