Twenty five years ago this month, a great wave of liberation swept through central and eastern Europe. In Czechoslovakia it was called the Velvet Revolution. Here is the song of that revolution, “Prayer for Marta,” and the story about it (told briefly). Marta Kubisova sang it in as an a cappella impromptu to the revolutionaries in 1989. The song was a 1968 Czech hit about the yearnings for self-determination, and Kubisova was banned from public performance in 1970. My own life was deeply affected by both public events and personal developments in 1989, which along with 1968 were pivotal in my life.
