Twenty-five years ago tonight, I sat alone in a little cottage I rented in Summerville SC on one end of the sofa by a flickering candle and a staticky transistor radio, and looked up to see the ceiling fall, as unbeknownst to me the last amazing wind gust had toppled an enormous oak tree which crushed the roof, collapsed it toward the floor, blew out a couple of walls, fell across the opposite end of the sofa and into the bedroom, where a thigh-sized oak branch impaled both matresses, the floor, and the ground. The ceiling stopped a foot or two above my head, shredded insulation hung down on me, cold wind blew around the compressed remains of the room and rain dripped down my neck, but I was unscathed. Hurricane Hugo caused 34 deaths, 6 of them from collapsing houses and falling trees. It was very nearly 35 and 7, but fortunately I had not gone to bed and was on the other end of the sofa. #SurvivedHugo
