Twenty-two years after the success of the counter-revolution in the Soviet Union, Ruben Tovmasyan, Secretary General of the Armenian Communist Party, reflected on the reasons and results of this event in an interview in the French publication "Initiative Communiste" (July-August 2013). Tovmasyan called the dissolution of the Soviet Union by Gorbachev with the assistance of Shevardnadze, Yakolev and others "a grand treason," since 76 percent of the country had voted in a referendum in favor of maintaining the Soviet Union. The result, which many call "a collapse," he prefers to call the "dissolution" of the country. This was the end sought by the United States, Britain and Germany, and it succeeded because of the "limited thinking" of Gorbachev. Tovmasyan said that he was in agreement with the so-called Committee of State Emergency that sought to preserve the Soviet Union (and replace Gorbachev) but this committee lacked the determination and courage to complete the task and moreover it was not able to establish links between the people and those conducting the coup. The committee was not in a position to take the audacious and revolutionary steps necessary at that time. Instead, the self-styled democrats were able to profit from the situation and achieve their ends by "democratic" methods. "Gorbachev with his clique defamed an entire generation—its future and its past....He accomplished willingly what had been impossible during the Great Patriotic War, to break the Soviet people." The Secretary General said that one of the principal benefits of the Soviet Union consisted of preserving the peace and friendship between people, not only in the Soviet Union but in the world. As to the 22nd anniversary of Armenian independence, he said: "What have these 22 years of independence meant? Poverty, the destruction of industry, science and education, farmers forced from the land into misery, emigration, unemployment, the degradation of culture, and the creation of a situation of war...All that was and remains bad is what we have seen in the course of 22 years." "We have nothing to say to our people on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of independence. This system is dishonored. It is an agony at an international level and it must be forced to leave the historical stage. In this situation, Armenia will be saved only by the nationalization of the strategic sectors of national importance. To redress the economic crimes brought about since 1990, there is no other prescription. And the authors of these crimes (Gorbachev and his crowd) will be brought before a popular tribunal.
