Two Curry County Commissioners Attend NACO 2014 Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Commissioners Wendell Bostwick and Tim Ashley attended the National Association of Counties (NACO) 2014 Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. March 1-5. The conference brought over 2,000 elected and appointed county officials from across the country together to focus on the current legislative issues that face counties. This year, attendees were given the opportunity to hear from Mike Allen, Chief White House Correspondent for Politico, at the opening general session and later heard from various officials such as John Huntsman former governor of Utah and Anthony Foxx, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Bostwick attended various committee meetings such as the Public and Land Steering Committee and the Agricultural and Rural Affair Steering Committee. “All the workshops and sessions were very interesting with many of the topics being discussed germane to the issues in Curry County and New Mexico,” said Bostwick. Included in the conference agenda was a workshop on the overview of the Endangered Species Act. This act affects every State as listing certain species as endangered can cause detriment to local businesses and economies. Aside from the conference, Bostwick and Ashley were able to meet with various State Senators and Representatives such as Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham, Representative Ben Ray Lujan, Senator Tom Udall and Senator Martin Heinrich. Representative Steve Pearce and Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham to discuss topics such as Cannon Air Force Base, Ute water project and Lesser Prairie Chicken.
