Two Lovers in the Classroom: His eyes had already crossed twice with hers since morning. When the roof of the classroom quivered because of the violent rain, he scribbled something on a chit and passed it to her beneath the desk. Though she wanted to open it immediately, she showed great restraint just to play with his anxiety. Crushing it in her fist, she let it linger on her desk for some time and watched him become restless like the rain. Their eyes talked and he pleaded with her to open it. She unfolded the crumpled paper and read through what was written. It said, ‘Let us sneak out.’ This time, she could not contain her smile. She looked at him and blinked reassuringly. Leaving their notebooks behind, a moment later, they fled as lovers, hand in hand, dancing in the rain. They hugged, breathed, kissed with each other. They jumped, played and sloshed in those little puddles. In the classroom, the teacher kept blabbering about modern history of the country among the distracted bunch of students, ignoring the clamor of rain. Little did he know that their minds were already one with it. The rain stopped and so did the lecture. They returned to the classroom drenched and unkempt, drops of water dripping down their chins. It was only when a few of those drops fell on their notebooks and smudged their neat notes of the lecture that they realized that they had left a part of them behind to note whatever was being taught, when they let their minds romp outside in the rain.
