Two Pennsy Baldwin D2-12-8-1500/2 Centipede locomotives in helper - TopicsExpress

Two Pennsy Baldwin D2-12-8-1500/2 Centipede locomotives in helper service at Horseshoe Curve in 1953. Built between 1945-48 the locomotive class was Baldwins first attempt at producing a mass market road diesel. The units sat on 12 axles (8 driven) on an articulated, jointed cast steel frame powered by two 1500 HP engines. The units proved to be problematic, and much like Baldwins steam locomotives no two were alike. Pennsy owned 24 of the 55 produced, and eventually derated them for helper service.
