Two Perspectives on an Evening Fire: Witness to the Death of a Bug The back corner of the heavy corrugated box smoldered as it sat atop the coals when a small black bug flew into the open end, walking stalwartly into its reaches, calmly as a martyr condemned by Diocletian himself. I waited, hoping for him to quickly back out but he never re-emerged; then engulfed in orange flames the box collapsed and I alone am left to testify to that little bug’s last moments of life and to his demise. The Reluctant Firestarter I start the evening fire with thoughts of ancestors who eons ago stood at the ready on barren mountain tops awaiting the sign to light the signal fire, sending fiery communiques across the peaks, alerting neighbouring kith to some immediacy or notice. I warily watch the flames blaze higher against the darkening sky with trepidation, a bucket of water nearby, knowing that my celtic luck has more in common with Catherine O’ Leary and her cow than with any ancient ancestor’s skill for combustion containment.
