Two Philippine cities named selfie capital of the world The Ellen DeGeneres-initiated “selfie” at the Oscars may be the most reposted but when it comes to taking the most digital self-portraits, Filipinos hold the record. Two Philippine cities share the distinction of being the “selfie” capital of the world, with at least 258 selfie-takers per 100,000 people, a TIME Magazine report said. Makati and Pasig in Metro Manila produce “more selfies per capita than any other city in the world” based on TIME’s analysis of mapped Instagram data. TIME came up with the ranking of 459 cities by building a database of 400,000 Instagram photos tagged “selfie” and which included geographical coordinates. But Makati and Pasig were not the only Philippine cities in the top 10. The southern city of Cebu landed 9th on the list, with 99 selfie-takers per 100,000. Here is TIME’s complete list of the 10 “selfiest cities”: 1. Makati and Pasig City (258 selfie-takers per 100,000) 2. Manhattan, New York (202) 3. Miami, Florida (155) 4. Anaheim and Santa Ana, California (147) 5. Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (141) 6. Tel Aviv, Israel (139) 7. Manchester, England (114) 8. Milan, Italy (108) 9. Cebu City, Philippines (99) 10. George Town, Malaysia (95) More Philippine cities were also included in the TIME list’s top 100. The so-called summer capital Baguio City came in at 16th, Quezon City at 59th and Iloilo at 72nd. Grouped regionally, North America and Europe still dominated the top 100, comprising almost two-thirds of the list of the worlds “selfiest.” But Southeast Asian cities are also making their presence felt strongly online, with Philippine cities leading the pack of least 15 other cities in the region. Aside from Petaling Jaya and George Town in the top 10, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru were in the 100 selfiest, ranking 21st and 50th respectively. Mueang Nonthaburi in Thailand was ranked 44th while the bustling city-state of Singapore was ranked 53rd in the list, with 46 selfie-takers per 100,000. Indonesia had three cities in the list’s top 100, namely Denpasar (18th), Yogyakarta (43rd) and Bandung (88th). TIME noted, however, that not all photos tagged “selfie” were in fact selfies and that “the metric of ‘people who take selfies per capita’ is far from a perfect measure.” Still, it noted, that the unit is “far and away the most comprehensive means of comparing the 459 world cities that turned up at least 25 individual users.”
