Two and three wide racing on a very action-packed night at Madison Speedway! By: Carly Tofte Madison, MN (August 3rd) – A great night of racing with lots of two and three wide battles took place at Madison Speedway on Saturday night when Jager Building Supply of Dawson presented the show. Up first, Mike Jans made a clean sweep of the night as he scored his fifth win of the season at Madison Speedway. After starting sixth, Jans quickly moved his way through the field as he sliced past Andrew Rossow and both Rob and Maria Konold to move into the third position. Leader, Darrin Landmark, ran solid out front with Ryan Nelson in second until a yellow flew for a spun car in the bottom of turn three. Back under green, Jans quickly snuck under Nelson for the second position and ran tight on Landmark’s bumper. Jans ran content in second until he ducked low and stole the top spot at the midpoint of the race. At the same time, Jordan Tollakson began to battle with Rob Konold for third as he tried to move through the field. Soon Grady Myers joined the mix for third and quickly snuck forward by working the bottom of the track. Tollakson changed lanes and followed Myers in a charge to the front, but Jans had worked up too much of a lead on the field. Jans crossed the line first in his Wissota Street Stock, trailed by Landmark, Myers, Rob Konold, and Tollakson in the top five. Andy Stroschein and Scott Harrington led a full field of Wissota Midwest Modifieds to the green flag, with Stroschein prevailing with the lead as they exited turn two. Soon Ryan Schluesner and DJ Tesch sandwiched Harrington as they shot down the backstretch in a battle for second. Tesch worked the lowside into second place, while Schluesner worked the highside to move into third. Brock Gronwald soon showed his strength as he moved from his seventh-place starting position into fourth, and put pressure on Schluesner for third. Soon Jason Vejtruba joined Gronwald in the battle with Schluesner; Gronwald and Vejtruba both slipped by as second-place runner Tesch slowed and pulled pitside. Soon thereafter, a yellow flew at the halfway point for debris and the field was reset with Gronwald and Vejtruba lining up right on Stroschein’s bumper. Under green, Gronwald and Vejtruba split Stroschein as they battled door-to-door for the lead, with Gronwald eventually taking over on the topside. Randy Laage began to move forward by working the high groove and driving around Harrington and Stroschein for the fourth position. With just a few laps remaining Schluesner caught and passed Vejtruba by using the lowside, while Laage continued to use the highside to reel them in. Gronwald scored with victory, tailed by Schluesner, Laage, who completed a last lap pass for third, Vejtruba, and Stroschein who completed the top five. The Wissota Super Stocks pulled onto the track next with Alan Johnson and Justin Hedtke fighting for the lead on the start. Johnson prevailed and began to stretch a lead on the field as Hedtke felt pressure from Gary Husmann for second. Husmann soon snuck his machine below Hedtke and worked to reel in the leader. With five laps remaining, Husmann caught Johnson and took over the top spot. Hedtke followed around the bottom and moved into second, just before Johnson spun his machine in the bottom of turn three and the yellow flew. On the restart, Husmann took off again and scored another victory on the season at Madison Speedway. Justin Hedtke came home second, followed by Shane Brick, Bob Holtquist, and John Hoefert in the top five. For the second week in a row, South Dakota’s, Mike Stearns, rolled into town with his Wissota Modified and grabbed the hardware. Local driver, Nate Heinrich, ran the highside early as he battled with Andy Gordon for the top spot; Gordon prevailed just as an early caution fell. Back under green, Gordon ran out front as Stearns, Terry Engebretson, and Scott Ward ran three-wide in a race for third. Stearns shot by on the lowside and brought Jeff Taylor along with him. Stearns quickly reeled in the leaders, with Heinrich continuing to run the topside and Gordon down low. Stearns made a solid pass on Heinrich and then made himself content running right on Gordon’s bumper near the halfway point. Farther back in the field, Taylor drove low to make a pass on Heinrich for third and then continued to chase the leaders on the lowside. Soon thereafter, Heinrich, Ward, and Canadian driver, Ward Imrie, raced in a cluster for the fourth position with Imrie coming out ahead by working the bottom of the track. Back up front, Stearns continued to run right on Gordon’s bumper as the laps clicked away. After taking the white flag, Stearns changed his entry going into turn one and took to the highside where he used momentum to take over the lead while going down the backstretch. Stearns crossed the checkers first and took home an exciting win, trailed by Gordon, Imrie, Taylor, and Ward in the top five. In the Madison Pure Stocks, Jon Tollakson and Ryan Nelson battled early until Tollakson took control and scored his sixth feature win of the season. Nelson came home second, followed by Henry Hacker, TJ Cooper, and Sawyer Nelson. Racing resumes next Saturday night, August 10th at 7 p.m. when the Advantage RV Modified tour presented by Watertown Ford-Chrysler rolls into town.
