Two available positions (postdoctoral fellows/professional assistants/visiting scientists) in the lab of Dr. NongnujTanphaichitr and Dr. Duane Hickling, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute There are two lines of research in which each candidate can choose to participate in both or to focus on one. The first project (funded by CIHR and formerly by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) is on development of an antimicrobial host defence peptide, LL-37, and its related shorter peptides, as contraceptives with anti-HIV activity. See details of the published work on LL-37 in Human Reproduction, 2014 (humrep.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/deu018? ijkey=RhWzvKKN32XKSqF&keytype=ref ); similar approaches will be used for the study on the shorter peptides. Effects of LL-37 and the related peptides on the female reproductive tract (including wound healing) will be determined following application of the peptide formulated gel into the vagina. As well, the ability of the peptides to inhibit HIV infection will be investigated. Experience in molecular immunology of the female reproductive tract, sperm physiology and/or antimicrobial peptides will be an asset in this project. See more details of the project at ohri.ca/profiles/tanpha.asp. The second line of research involves characterizing the roles of host defense peptides in the urinary tract. Specifically, we will study the effects of LL-37 and other antimicrobial host defense peptides in the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infection. We will determine whether urethral catheters, which are coated with antimicrobial host defense peptides, will lessen the incidents of infection and/or inflammation. Experience in immunology, microbiology, urothelial biology, urinary tract infection, and/or antimicrobial peptides will be an important asset for this work. Please send CV to Dr. NongnujTanphaichitr ([email protected]) and Dr. Duane Hickling ([email protected]).
