Two cops plead not guilty to bribery: KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — Two police officers pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of agreeing to accept a RM4,000 bribe from a woman seeking to gain the release of her husband from police custody. Assistant Superintendent S. Ravintharan, 50, and Inspector Suriati Mohd Shafie, 31, are jointly charged with agreeing to accept the bribe from Nurullizean Yahya as an inducement for them to release her husband, Tchouanseu Tchounga Armand, a Cameroon national detained for suspected involvement in a robbery case. They were alleged to have committed the offence at the office of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Brickfields District Police headquarters (Petaling police station) between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Jan 22 this year. The offence, made under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and fine of up to RM10,000, if found guilty. Suriati is also charged with soliciting RM6,000 from Nurullizean for the same purpose at the same location at noon on the same day. The prosecution, conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Nur Lokman Samingan, offered bail of RM5,000 on each charge. However, lawyer Datuk P.M. Nagarajan asked for the bail amount to be reduced on grounds that Ravintharan had served for 32 years, while Suriati had two young children and parents, both suffering from diabetes, to support. Judge Mohd Nasir Nordin allowed Ravintharan bail of RM4,000 and Suriati RM6,000 in one surety each. The court set October 9 for mention. — Bernama dlvr.it/3x3T90
