Two current television series, Black Sails and Crossbones, - TopicsExpress

Two current television series, Black Sails and Crossbones, address, as television drama often does, one of the two paramount issues of our time: social and economic injustice, the other being oppression of women. These are pirate stories. The received version of piracy is that it arose from lawless greed, like Wall Street’s. But it was also a response to greed and oppression. It was an attack on the class system, the kind of class system we have imposed on ourselves by allowing a predatory elite to savage labor in behalf of capital. These two stories are in fact about the kind of unrest that Homeland Security is preparing for by militarizing our police departments into faceless commandos. The pirates relfected an unrest rooted in an unjust and predatory social and economic system, but we have inherited an authorized version of piracy, notwithstanding its romanticization in literature and film. I suspect thse series represent a Jungian synchronicity. Their themes were in the air. imdb/title/tt2400631/ starz/originals/blacksails
