Two experiments scheduled later this year -- one at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, the other under a mountain in Italy -- will seek to detect the presence of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The particles are hypothesized to make up dark matter, but previous experiments have been steadily shrinking the volume of parameter space that the particles could occupy. The new experiments could be sensitive enough to rule out WIMPs altogether.
