Two friends, Sam and Joshua, were going back to their shamba for the weekend. The final bus stage was a few kilometres from their village, but they knew a short-cut across some wasteland. As they walked through the long grass, Joshua suddenly stopped, and then he edged sideways and crouched behind a clump of bushes. A puzzled Sam followed him.“What’s the matter?” he asked. Joshua was wide-eyed and seemed to be having difficulty breathing. But after a few little gasps he whispered: “Just up ahead … near that rock … there’s a pack of hyenas. I think they might have seen us.” Sam stayed still for a moment, then he quietly opened his little suitcase, took out a pair of very smart Adidas running shoes, and started to put them on. “That’s dumb,” said Joshua. “Those won’t make you run faster than hyenas”. “No they won’t,” agreed Sam, “but they will help me run faster than you.”
